Ukraine War – Latest: Kyiv denies 600 soldiers were killed in Russian missile attack as ‘bloodiest’ battle rages on

Air raid sirens in Ukraine despite Russian call for ceasefire

Officials in Ukraine have dismissed Russia’s claim that Kyiv lost 600 of its troops in a single missile strike in a Donetsk city, saying there were in fact no fatalities in the incident.

According to a Reuters ground report, there were no obvious signs of casualties at the site where Russia claims it successfully attacked hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers.

It comes as Ukrainian forces defended towns and cities in eastern Ukraine in the “bloody” battle of the war yet, Volodymyr Zelensky said last night as the conflict entered its 320th day.

Mr Zelensky said: “Bakhmut is holding out despite everything. And although most of the city was destroyed by Russian attacks, our soldiers are repelling constant Russian advances.”

“Soledar is holding out even though there’s more destruction to come and things are very difficult,” he added.

Russia has resumed offensive efforts after Vladimir Putin declared a unilateral ceasefire for the Orthodox Christmas celebration over the weekend, although there was little sign of a halt to fighting at the front lines.

Ukraine denies Russia’s claim that it killed 600 soldiers in a “mass attack”.

Officials in Ukraine have denied the loss of 600 soldiers in a “mass rocket attack” on barracks housing Ukrainian soldiers, as alleged by Russia yesterday.

The attacks on Kramatorsk did not inflict any casualties on Ukrainian forces and only hit civilian infrastructure, said Serhii Cherevatyi, spokesman for Ukrainian forces in the east.

The Russian Defense Ministry has claimed missiles hit two makeshift bases in the town of Kramatorsk with 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers.

But the spokesman said that the “Armed Forces of Ukraine were not affected”.

Kramatorsk Mayor Oleksandr Honcharenko said two school buildings and eight apartments were damaged.

Another Reuters report reported that there were “no obvious signs of casualties” at the site of the Russian strike.
