The Houston Texans continue their extensive search for a new head coach and are reportedly eyeing a candidate from an NFC playoff team.

NFL Networks Ian Rapport reported Tuesday that the Texans filed an interview request for New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

Houston isn’t alone in his interest in Kafka, as Rapoport added that the Carolina Panthers have also requested an interview with him.

The Texans then find themselves once again on the hunt for a new head coach Burn Lovie Smith after a 3-13-1 campaign. Smith is the second straight coach not to last more than a year at Houston. David Culley was ousted after the 2021 season.

While many have questioned the skills of the franchise’s front office, team owner Cal McNair has told reporters Monday that he has “complete faith” in general manager Nick Caserio.

Maybe things will be different this time as Caserio will operate fully autonomously after October Burn by Executive Vice President of Football Operations Jack Easterby. Now that the decision is solely in his hands, Caserio can find someone who can change the culture of the team with a recovery plan that will last more than a year.

The Texans would do well to give Kafka some heed as he is a rising name in the coaching ranks thanks to an impressive season in New York. The Giants were initially viewed as a rebuilding project before freshman head coach Brian Daboll initiated a major turnaround that resulted in a 9-7-1 record and a postseason berth.

Under Kafka’s direction, New York had the fourth-best rushing offense in the league at 148.2 yards per game. The often-maligned quarterback Daniel Jones showed great growth, posting career highs of 3,205 passing yards and a 67.2 percent completion rate, along with 15 touchdowns and a career low of five interceptions.
