LeBron James’ march toward Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s career record pause on Monday. James, who scored 37 points in the Lakers’ win over the Kings on Saturday, is out for LA’s match against Denver on Monday night with pain in his left ankle. James — averaging 38 points in his last four games — is within 423 points to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. It remains to be seen if James will be back in action for the Lakers’ next game on Thursday against Dallas.

Below is where the race stands after Saturday’s action.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar

Lebron James

For the season, James is averaging 29.1 points per game. If he keeps up that pace, it would take him 15 more games to overtake Jabbar. If James doesn’t miss (more) games now and then, and if the pace is maintained, the record would be set on Feb. 9 at home against the Milwaukee Bucks.

LeBron is keeping the Lakers afloat until Anthony Davis can come back, and honestly he might not be able to sit down many games before Davis is back.

  • LeBron’s last three games: 37 in Sacramento; 25 in Atlanta, 43 in Charlotte
  • LeBron’s next three games: vs. Dallas (January 12), vs. Philadelphia (January 15), vs. Houston (January 16)

“I look forward to seeing it. I don’t see records as personal achievements, but rather as human achievements.” said Adbul-Jabbar ahead of the 2021-22 season over LeBron potentially breaking his record. “If one person can do something that has never been done before, it means we all have a chance to do it. It is a source of hope and inspiration. Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile in 1954. Since then, not only have they beaten 1,400 runners back then, but the new record is 17 seconds off. We all win when a record is broken, and if LeBron breaks mine, I’ll be right there to cheer him on.

This post will be updated after each game until LeBron is at the top of the all-time scorer list.
