Kate Hudson reflected on amicably co-parenting her three children with their three different fathers.
The 43-year-old actress, who shares son Ryder, 18, with ex-husband Chris Robinson, son Bingham, 11, with ex-fiancé Matt Bellamy, and daughter Rani Rose, 4, with fiancé Danny Fujikawa, opened up about her blended family in an interview with The Sunday Times.
“It may not look traditional from the outside, but inside I feel like we’re killing it,” the “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” star told the outlet.
She continued, “The unit I’ve created with three kids with three different fathers is a seriously strong unit, and it’s ours.”
KATE HUDSON SAYS FAMOUS PARENTS GOLDIE HAWN, KURT RUSSELL, WANTED TO HAVE ‘THE BEST FAMILY’
“I’m not interested in forcing a conventional idea of love or marriage. I’d like to be able to grow intimately with my partner for a long time, but I don’t wear rose-colored glasses either.”
“My purpose in life is that I want to feel love and give love, but I’m also practical, so day by day,” Hudson added. “I work really hard at relationships because I like them.”
“My parents did a wonderful job of continuing that dance,” noted the Academy Award nominee.
Hudson was referring to her mother Goldie Hawn, 77, and her partner of 39, Kurt Russell, 71. Although Hudson is the biological daughter of Hawn and musician Bill Hudson, 73, the “Fool’s Good” actress has said she considers Russell to be like her father.
Hudson famously moved in with 55-year-old Robinson just a few days after they met in May 2000. The couple tied the knot on New Year’s Eve that year and Hudson gave birth to Ryder in 2004. However, the two separated in November 2006 and finalized their divorce in October 2007.
In her interview with the Times, Hudson shared her thoughts on how she’s approached parenting differently since welcoming her firstborn to the founder of The Black Crowes when she was 24.
“I’m definitely more present as a mom now that I’m older,” said the Los Angeles native. “With Ryder, our relationship is so special because I grew up with him. The great learning period of my life and becoming a woman happened while I was a mother.”
She continued: “It was a choice. We wanted to have a baby and it felt instinctive. I was very attached to him and vice versa. I took him everywhere. I didn’t leave him until he was two. school until he was 10, while I’m much more structured with my other kids.As Ryder got older, [realized] a little more structure would be good for the child.”
The Fabletics founder shared that her eldest is “in college and very happy,” adding, “Chris and I just need to check in from time to time.”
Hudson and Bellamy, 44, started dating in 2010 after meeting at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California. The two revealed they got engaged in April 2011 and welcomed Bingham “Bing” in July of that year.
In December 2014, the actress and the Muse frontman announced that they had called off their engagement. However, they have remained on good terms since the end of their romance.
“Matt is so great – I couldn’t have wished for a better co-parent,” said Hudson.
“For me it’s like you loved this person. That doesn’t just go away, but you can restore a different kind of love,” she added. “You can have a great time with an ex-partner because you’re really only focused on your child’s love.”
Bellamy is now married to model Elle Evans, whom he married in 2019. The two share 2-year-old daughter Lovella. Hudson told the Times that she and Evans are good friends and they vacation with their families.
The “Almost Famous” star began dating 36-year-old Fujikawa, a longtime family friend, in December 2016. Hudson first met the musician when she was 23 and pregnant with Ryder.
In April 2018, Hudson announced they were expecting their first child together, and they welcomed Rani late that year. The two announced in September 2021 that they were engaged.

Hudson told the Times the couple are in no rush to the altar. “I hope we get married!” she said with a smile. “We’re in no rush. The last thing I need right now is planning a wedding on top of everything else, but I’m looking forward to it.”
“Last night he was looking at some old footage on his phone of him and Rani and it melted my heart,” she added. “He’s such a great father and stepfather.”
