Canadians Alexis Galarneau and Katherine Sebov won the first qualifying rounds at the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Galarneau of Laval, Que. defeated Britain’s Ryan Peniston 7-6(5), 6-2. Toronto’s Sebov upset Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova – No. 2 in the women’s qualifying draw – 6-4 3-6 6-4.
The qualifier will continue throughout the week leading up to the opening game of the main draw on Monday.
Six Canadian players are on the main draw entry list for the first Grand Slam of the season.
Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario and Vasek Pospisil, a native of Vernon, BC compete in the men’s draw. The women’s draw includes Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario and Rebecca Marino of Vancouver.
Carol Zhao of Richmond Hill, Ontario was scheduled to play her second-round qualifier on Wednesday against 17th-seeded Clara Burel of France.
