Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from a central Florida hospital Monday night after being treated for abdominal pain related to a 2018 stabbing.
“Grateful for the prayers and messages for a speedy recovery,” the President tweeted.
His wife Michelle Bolsonaro confirmed her husband’s hospitalization in an Instagram post on Monday.
Bolsonaro’s hospitalization comes as Brazil is still rocked by a mob of rioters who swarmed the country’s Congress, Supreme Court and presidential residence on Sunday.
Many of the protesters have said they want the Brazilian army to put Bolsonaro back in power and oust newly installed leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
DEMOCRATS ORGANIZE OFFER TO EXTRADICT BOLSONARO FROM FLORIDA AFTER ATTACK ON BRAZILIAN CAPITOL
Bolsonaro flew to Florida ahead of Lula’s inauguration. He wrote on Twitter that peaceful protest is part of democracy, but vandalism and trespassing on public buildings are “exceptions to this rule.”
Before Sunday’s riots, Bolsonaro had been spotted repeatedly in a central Florida community near Orlando, wandering the aisles of a Publix supermarket, dining alone at a local KFC and, most importantly, surrounded by groups of adoring fans.
Although the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said it received a request from the Secret Service to provide a police escort for Bolsonaro upon his arrival, and he was still acting president, he was not surrounded by a noticeable phalanx of security.
His new home, the Encore Resort at Reunion in suburban Orlando, consists of furnished rentals with foosball tables, screening rooms, Disney decor on the walls, and Mickey Mouse stuffed animals on beds.
When asked by reporters Monday whether the US would send Bolsonaro back to Brazil, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the Biden administration had not received any inquiries from Brazil related to the former president.

Brazilian Justice Minister Flavio Dino told reporters that Brazil currently has no plans to ask the US for Bolsonaro’s extradition.
