NFL Week 18 – New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick confirmed Monday morning that he will return as head coach for the 2023-2024 season. Next year, his 71-year season, would extend Belichick’s longest active tenure as head coach with the New England Patriots to a 24th season.
“Like we do every year,” Belichick said meanwhile a press conference on Monday morning“We will evaluate everything and try to make the best possible decisions to move forward, be more competitive and have a stronger team in the future,” said Robert [Kraft] and I’m going to talk about it, we’re going to talk about it as employees… But we need to get better results. And that really is the bottom line. That’s really where we are today.”
The announcement comes a day after New England’s loss to the Buffalo Bills, which eliminated the Patriots from playoff contention. The Patriots’ 8-9 season marks Belichick’s third losing season as head coach of the Patriots, but also the second of its kind in three years.
Entering week 18, New England’s -9.9% offensive DVOA would be the franchise’s worst season since 1993. New England’s final finish in Special Teams DVOA would also be the lowest result in franchise history. However, New England also entered with the third-best defensive DVOA of Belichick’s tenure in Week 18.
