Apple is working on a new internal chip that will support cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality on its devices. according to a report by Bloomberg. The company is also developing its own chip that would replace the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip it currently uses from Broadcom. Bloomberg says, which is to be used in devices from 2025.
Bloomberg also shared some new information about Apple’s efforts to develop its own cellular modems to replace Qualcomm’s. While Qualcomm recently said during its fourth-quarter 2022 results that it expects to have the “vast majority” of 5G modems for 2023 iPhones, Bloomberg Apple will use its own modems “by late 2024 or early 2025.” Apple will apparently start using its custom modem in one product and completely transition them over the course of about three years.
When asked for comment, Qualcomm spokeswoman Clare Conley referred to what the company said during its fourth-quarter earnings conference call: “Regarding Apple product sales, we now expect to be able to report for the 2023 iPhone launch.” will have the vast majority of the share in 5G modems compared to our previous 20% assumption. Additionally, there are no changes to our planning assumption and we expect a minimal contribution from Apple product sales in FY25.”
Should Apple get these rumored chips into production, they would represent another addition to the company’s growing lineup of custom chips, which already includes things like the A-Series system-on-a-chip lineup. However, the development of the cellular modem seems to be difficult. The company acquired “a majority” of Intel’s smartphone modem business in 2019 Nikkei reported in 2021 Apple said it was planning to use its own 5G modem by 2023, but recent comments from Qualcomm suggest Apple won’t be making the switch until 2024 at the earliest.
It’s unclear when a combined cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth chip could be integrated into an iPhone. Since we will probably have to wait a while for the in-house cellular modem alone, we could still be a long way from a combined component. Apple and Broadcom did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
